Vocations - Vacations

Lot of us find ourselves at the wrong side when it comes to jobs. We know we are not good at it and but still find ourselves doing it. For me, music is such that. It has been a great passion for me for so many years now, but I haven't done anything about it still.

Well, I came across this site called Vocation-Vacations. They have some 200 dream jobs listed to pick up yours, get a training on it and pursue it if it is still your dream. A wonderful idea. Let me know if it works for you...

Commenting...

Sorry.

If you had been here before and if you had liked to 'Comment' on something and if it had asked for you to register.. forgive me..

I didn't understand Blogger clearly until a few hours ago. So if you would like to let me know something.. please.. don't hesitate..

You are blessed.

Bzzagent.com

Word of mouth advertising.

What are the chances that you will read this post the very next hour it is posted. Maybe, what are the chances that you will read this within two weeks or within a month after it is posted. (I created this blog only a month ago so the chance of you tracking this blog is extremely minimal and so is the chance of you reading this post in short time).

And the same rule applies for any new business too. Unless you have a big margin for advertising, it is highly unlikely that you will get noted in short span. You might be providing a better idea, better servicing or better solutions. But people have to know that you exist to try it (..and they will not try it until they know it) and it is not going to happen anytime sooner.

But here is a novel idea. Why not build a social network of people who is interested in exploring things, get their areas of interest and let them know that there is a better idea available out there. Give them the idea and let the world know about their honest opinion about it. I really really liked this business model of advertising and I didn't know that something like this is around for me quite sometime now.

Yes, I am talking about Bzzagent.com.

The whole idea of this site is make people have their first hand at a product, get their honest opinion about the product and post their opinions on the site as well as make it a good conversation starter to their friends.

So if you are like 'exploring stuff', then you ought to be here. The world around us is getting smarter by everyday (..atleast I believe so) and you have to know it faster to be better.

Happy Bzzing..

Our Deepest fear...

Actually I got to know about this quote from one of the podcasts by Pamela Slim. The quote is originally by Marianne Williamson and it is no secret why Nelson Mandela used this in his inaugural speech as President for South Africa.

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It is not just in some of us; it is in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”

Working Hard Vs Working Late

Most of us stay long hours in work. At least most of the people I know do.

Just last evening when I was talking to a friend of mine said that he was working full day yesterday even when he was running with high temperatures. I am not trying to bring down his dedication towards his work. But is this what we are for? I know most of us will not do what we do if this day happens to be our last day. Certainly I won't.

The point I am trying to make here is that amount of time you actually spent in your office / work doesn't really mean that you are working hard. To a certain extent 'maybe'. But mostly it only means that you are working late. And it doesn't get you anywhere. You might get a small bump in your salary with 1 or 2 years of your 'working late', but that really means nothing.

I'll give you my example..I got a revision on my salary this April 1st.. and I still couldn't believe it.. you know.. I have got a revision of some 1.5% increase in my total salary for the year. It doesn't even adjust to inflation. Inflation in US stands around 4%, I believe but in India it is hovering around 6-6.5%.. Given the case, it is not appreciation that I have got.. itz depriciation.. I'll be getting less than what I have got the same time last year.. Oh! you have to perform for you to get a better salary.. but I am not a very bad employee either.. I've got good ratings for the past 3 years.. This all means just one thing.. all our 'working late' doesn't even help to revise our salary to get appreciated even to the inflation.. and we cannot be well off in our lives by this appreciation..

So what should we do.. I think itz always easier to say than done.. but the fact is we have to work hard.. and yes not by staying late in office.. here are some thoughts to get you started to work hard.. and I am trying to follow them too..

1. Go home and try a new dish that you have never tried before.. or go to a restaurant that you have never tried before and repeat this once every week..
2. Call or mail everyone you know that you have lost contact with in the past year or two (or more).. get in touch and add them to orkut list..
3. Take your bike or get into a bus and explore some place you haven't been to..
4. Go to a concert or a play that you are completely unfamiliar with.. (I want to go to an 'Opera' and I don't know a thing about it..)
5. Speak up and speak out.. if someone asks for a questions, ask one.. if you read something interesting, give it a comment..
6. Well.. at last.. do some exercise.. itz quite a freshner for your mind and body..

If you think what the hell do all the above have to do with you getting started for working hard, I can only tell you that they all have a capability to give you some new ideas.. and it is that new idea I mean as working hard.. Get a new idea.. change the world.. and you can be well off in a way that you even couldn't have imagined..

Good Luck!

P.S. - Yes.. this post is part inspired by one of the riffs from Seth Godin's "small is the new big"...

Seth Godin speaks!

If you are yet not aware, Seth Godin is speaking in Chicago on May 22, 2007 about his new book 'The Dip - A Little Book that teaches you when to Quit (or when to stick).

If you are not aware who is 'Seth Godin', he is the author of some 7 best-selling business books mostly in marketing and a very good speaker. And I am currently reading his 'Small is the new Big' and it is simply amazing. More about him here.

This is what Pamela Slim from 'Escape from Cubicle Nation' has to say about him and the event...

Impressed! If so and if you would like to join the party, this is the link that you have to follow...

See you there!

Chicago Vs Los Angeles

You all know that these are the 2 cities that is bidding for 2016 Olympics from US.. I can already see lots of ads around Chicago downtown promoting the event.. I am not sure if they have won the bid unofficially, but the official announcement is to be made only by April 14th..

Well, thatz not the reason why I am writing this here.. The head of Chicago team was asked a question 'Why Chicago will beat LA?'.. and he replied 'The level of private philanthropy in Chicago has been staggering'.. The head of LA team was asked the same question like 'Why LA will beat Chicago?'.. and he replied 'We're asked not to say anything negative about our competition...'

I wish LA wins the bid just for that answer...
